I have been a serious photographer since 1984, and have been offering my work to the public since turning professional in 1998. My aim is to share images of nature with others who find the natural world as fascinating as I do. When working with wildlife, I look for images that present a subject in its environment, conveying a larger story than "deer" or "eagle." My goal with landscapes is to capture the character, mood, or beauty of a particular place. Turning to flowers and plants, I move from capturing the essence of individual plants to focusing on patterns visible in nature. These are usually abstract, often overlooked, and frequently short lived. Ice patterns and details are an especially attractive subject for me. Ice subjects generally have a fleeting existence. Rime ice (also called hoar frost) dissolves with the first rays of the sun. Time and pressure turn clear ice cloudy while snow seals it from view. My goal is to capture these special images before transformation or sublimation alters their character. The result is often striking. I shoot in both 35mm and large format (4x5), and offer limited editions of custom-printed color photographs. I generally keep the edition size of each image fairly small, and will destroy its negative when the edition limit is reached. This provides me with a strong motivation to go out and gather more images!

Smalley Falls lies upstream of Long Slide Falls, on the North Branch of the Pemebonwon River north of Pembine, WI. Here, volcanic rock forces the cascading water into a narrow chute, with the stream opening up again below the plunge pool. The green of the mosses, ferns and overhanging trees all but shout “Spring!” in the Northwoods.

The showiest plant of the understory each spring in the Northwoods is the White (Large-flowered) Trillium (Trillium grandiflorum). In places like this it blankets the forest floor. These trillium were found in the Dells of the Eau Claire River State Natural Area, in Marathon County, WI. The canopy here consists of hemlock, sugar maple, mountain maple and yellow birch.

A typical Wisconsin stream winding through cow pastures, Skillet Creek is transformed as it passes through the Pewits Nest State Natural Area near Baraboo. Access to the canyon floor is difficult. Most people view the stream from a path over the ridge bisected by the creek on its way to the Baraboo River.
